AMMC Conference

For the first time, Morocco was selected to host the annual meeting of the International
Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), which was held in Marrakech from October 17
to 19, 2022. On the sidelines of this 47th annual meeting of IOSCO, AMMC organized an
international conference, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, on
October 20.
This high-level event brought together a cohort of 500 capital market influencers, leading financial
experts, government officials, renowned economists and thinkers, as well as capital market
regulators to discuss several hot and pressing topics related to capital markets. ABS and its
Advisory team took part in this conference too.
Indeed, the conference covered a multitude of important topics that can be grouped into 3 main
themes. The first one addressed the needs and challenges for capital markets to better forecast
the future including balancing inflation mitigation with the need for growth, readiness and
anticipation in a changing capital markets dynamics, embracing complexity of global affairs and
geopolitics as well as compliance with new regulations (fintech, sustainable finance, …).
The second theme focused on the role of capital markets in achieving the triple zero (Zero
exclusion, Zero carbon, Zero poverty) through 4 levers which are: Standardization and ethical
standards, proper disclosures to enable investors to make right decisions, building strong
mechanisms to ensure successful connections between the investors and money askers, and last
but not least, capacity building and understanding of the local dynamics.
The third theme focused on Fintech and digital finance and their impact on financial markets, in
the sense that they enable lower transaction costs, democratize access to financial products and
better protect against economic shocks, send money across borders, and create more creative
and innovative financial solutions. Besides, the tools currently used by regulators to oversee
cyber risk are insufficient. Therefore, regulators need to adopt technological capabilities,
understand the details/ codes in the near future to be able to provide the market with the right
tools to identify the risk and to neutralize it.
This unique forum was an opportunity to highlight Morocco's efforts to develop the capital market
to better support the country's economic and social growth. It also aims to position the country as
a regional financial hub, in line with the objectives of the New Development Model (NMD), as
stated by Ms. Nezha HAYAT, President of the AMMC.
